Valletta is the capital city of history and culture on the Maltese Islands. There’s no better city to discover more about the island than Valletta. If you’re interested in architecture, history and our ancestors – look no further than St John’s Co-Cathedral. Here you can witness the infamous Caravaggio painting of the Beheading of St John.

While you’re roaming around Valletta, you can also visit the Grand Master’s Palace (now the President’s Office), Auberge de Castille (now the Prime Minister’s office) and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where you can enjoy magnificent views. You can also visit the ample museums located around the capital, such as the National Museum of Archaeology, the National War Museum, the Malta 5D Experience, Casa Rocca Piccola and the newly refurbished MUZA National Community Art Museum.

Join in the Christmas festivities

First things first – as soon as you enter Valletta, you will witness a local artist’s masterpiece of the Maltese crib. Cribs portraying the nativity scene are quite popular and traditional in Malta. What’s special about this Maltese crib is the fact that some of the characters reflect local traditions such as the figure of Saint John Preca, the ‘luzzu’ boat and the ‘girna’ (a Maltese corbelled stone hut).

Embrace the Christmas season by walking along the Valletta streets and witnessing all the festive lights, especially the main ones at Republic Street. You can also visit the Christmas market that is happening at the Valletta Waterfront during the month of December.
